Doug Byrd is an aerobatic pilot and flying musician from the Washington DC area. He did not grow up around airplanes. He grew up around a program that put him in one: the East Coast Chapter Tuskegee Airmen's Youth in Aviation Program, where he started flight training at 16, had a pilot's license at 17, and graduated in 2008. Between 2012 and 2021 he flew eight sanctioned aerobatic contests with the International Aerobatic Club, starting in Primary and working up to Intermediate in a borrowed Extra 300L. He paid for the flying himself, cutting grass, teaching guitar, and playing bass and steelpan at churches and clubs, and earned his commercial pilot certificate in September 2024. Today he trains the Intermediate sequence with Rob Dumovic at Spread Aviation, and spends the rest of his time getting young people into cockpits and into the idea that they could want something bigger.
